Button Name Function
Add S-57 cell as a group Loads your base and update dataset files into ArcMap as
layer grouped layer files.
Set S-52 Properties Allows you to control various S-52 properties.
Set Reference Scale Sets the layer’s reference scale based on the map scale
for every dataset loaded.
Clear Reference Scale Clears the layer’s reference scale and resets to the
dynamic value based on each datasets DSPM CSCL value

Using the Esri S-57 Viewer tools
Loading S-57 datasets
1. Click the Add S-57 cell as a group layer button .
2. Navigate to your .000 file
Note: If you want to load updates, they must be in the same folder as your .000 file to allow them to
be automatically applied during the load process.
3. Select your cell(s) and click Open.
Notes:
• You will not be prompted with a progress dialog box.
• Once the cell(s) has finished loading, a new group layer will appear in your TOC with the
name of the .000 file.
• The display will be zoomed to the extent of the newly loaded dataset. Expand this group to
see the loaded layers. Only populated layers will be loaded. If you batch load your cells
then it will open to the extent of all batch loaded cells.
• Each S-57 object type is loaded into its own layer based on geometry type.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 for any additional S-57 datasets you want loaded.
Note:
• For external files used by PICREP and TXTDSC to be hyperlinked in the Identify tool they
must exist in the same location as the loaded dataset.

Changing S-52 Properties
The S-52 Properties page allows you to control various S-52 display options. You can display national
text, change your safety contour, turn off SCAMIN, and change your color scheme to name a few. All S-
57 Datasets in your current ArcMap session will honor these changes.
1. Click the Set S-52 Properties button .
The S52 Properties dialog box appears.
2. Change the desired setting(s).
3. Click OK.
The dialog box closes.
Note: All changes will immediately be reflected in the display.

Setting the Reference Scale
This option will help control the symbol and text size of your display.
1. Click the Set Reference Scale button .
The layer’s reference scale is set to the current map scale.
Note: As you continue to zoom in/out you might want to reset this value.

Clearing the Reference Scale
1. Click the Clear Reference Scale button .
Your reference scale has been cleared.
Note: This will return each layer to its DSPM CSCL value.
About Esri S-57 Viewer
1. Click the About Esri S-57 Viewer button .
The build number, install date, and install location are displayed.
Additional Information about the Esri S-57 Viewer
• The Layer M_QUAL_A is not visible by default. This improves draw performance.
• You can view S-57’s DSID, DSSI, and DSPM metadata. Each table is loaded as a polygon in its own
layer.
• Layer order is based on S-52.
• This version of the Esri S-57 Viewer uses S-52 Edition 3.2.
• The Esri S-57 Viewer will load any S-57 object or attribute. However, if that object or attribute is not
defined in News57.xml it will load it as undefined.
• CATALOG files are not supported.
• All S-52 default properties are set in the ECDISParameters.xml. Changes to this file will be honored
the next time ArcMap is opened.
• Hyperlinked External Files: Using the Identify tool allows you to click on an attribute value that
references an external file to open that file in ArcMap. For external files used by PICREP and
TXTDSC to be hyperlinked in the Identify tool, they must exist in the same location as the loaded
dataset file.
• SCAMIN Property: By default the use of SCAMIN for rendering data is turned on. Users can now
access and turn off the SCAMIN property by click on the S-52 properties button.
• Draw Performance: Increased draw performance by suppressing certain area patterns at small
scales.
Esri S-57 Viewer Install and User Guide
• IENC 2.1 Support: Object and attribute support added for IENC 2.1. Default S-52 rendering was
used. This will cause object and attribute combinations not covered by S-52 to be displayed using
magenta question marks (?) which is default for S-52.
• AML 2.1 Support: Object and attribute support added for AML 2.1. Default S-52 rendering was
used. This will cause object and attribute combinations not covered by S-52 to be displayed using
magenta question marks (?) which is default for S-52.
• MIO Ice Object Catalogue – Version 4: Object and attribute support added for MIO Ice Object
Catalogue Version 4. Default S-52 rendering was used. This will cause object and attribute
combinations not covered by S-52 to be displayed using magenta question marks (?) which is default
for S-52.
• Dynamically Set Reference Scale: When a dataset is loaded all the layer’s associated with that cell
automatically have their reference scale set to the cells DSPM CSCL value. You can still use the 1:1
set reference scale tool to override this setting and use the Clear Reference Scale tool to reset the
value using the DSPM CSCL value.
• Update Agency Code List: Updated to include the OpenECDIS.org list and IHO S-62 Edition 2.4.
• Group Layer Order: Each dataset’s group layer is ordered based on its CSCL value. The smallest
scale dataset file will be on the bottom and therefore drawn first. This will allow large scale dataset
files to draw on top of small scale datasets.
• Conditional Procedure QUAPOS01 and DATCVR01 have not been implemented.
• Certain complex line patterns are not supported. An example of this would be where a line pattern
consists of dashes and symbols. An anchorage area normally consists of dashed lines with symbols
of anchorages after every 5-6 dashes. Our implementation will only show the dashed line. No point
symbols will be imbedded in this line work.
• Complex area symbols are those where a symbol representing the center of the area is displayed. In
the example of an anchorage area the center of the polygon contains an anchorage symbol. Each
time you pan or zoom, the centroid is recalculated. The limitation is the centroid may not be the
actual center of the visible polygon and therefore the symbol could be misplaced.
• S-52 is the ENC Presentation Library and is not meant to display AML, IENC, or MIO data. The only
data that will be displayed with S-52 is the data that also exists in ENC. That is to say, if your AML
object (WRECK) is also supported in the ENC product specification then it should display the same
way with S-52. If the AML object is not supported in ENC then it will default to an unknown symbol.
S-52 is extensible so any AML objects that do not display can be added to the presentation library.
S-52 is fully documented and explains how to do this.
